NBRI, Lucknow has now initiated a very comprehensive research programme in Neem in
which an integrated research approach known an ethanopharmacology will be employed.
Ethanopharmacology is newly emerging interdisciplinary science which combines the
traditional wisdom and conceptual foundation of Ayurveda, particularly its pharmacy and
pharmacology (such as, ‘rasa’, guna’, ‘veerya’, vipaka’ and ‘prabhava’) with the modern
scientific knowledge (phytochemisty, pharmacy and pharmacology), tools and technology etc.
available in modern medicine. It is hoped that this integrated approach will lead to the
development  of scientifically verified, validated and standardized products based on Neem and
other such valuable medicinal plants to treat various human diseases as a preventive
medicine as well as their powerful and affective medicine and cosmetics.
Pharmaceutical and biopesticide companies of Western countries are busy in developing
patents and products from
Neem Oil Pesticide using the traditional wisdom of the Third World,
particularly  the Asian countries. Therefore, it is the utmost important for the countries like India
to undertake serious scientific investigations to convert our precious traditional wisdom
knowledge on Neem to 21st century’s value added products. Scientific publications on Neem
and Neem products are over 1700 or more by 2002. There are over 150 patents based on
‘Neem’ most of which are filed by
USA, UK & Japan. USA alone have taken 40 patents on
Neem.
Many countries who never had Neem tree have now started introducing Pure Neem Oil for
developing
Neem based pesticides/insecticides. Recently Vietnam launched a massive Neem
Plantation programme and is availing the expertise/consultancy of NBRI, Lucknow.
